ABOUT Yorkshire Terrier BREED
ORIGIN/HISTORY
The Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire. In the mid-nineteenth century, workers from Scotland came to Yorkshire for work and brought several varieties of terrier dogs. Breeding of the Yorkshire terrier was “principally accomplished by the people – mostly operatives in cotton and woolen mills – in the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire.” In the 1800s, miners wanted to develop a ratting terrier, so they bred Black-and-Tan Terriers with the Paisley and Clydesdale Terriers.
The general appearance of Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a compact, toy-size terrier weighing no more than seven pounds. Its crowning glory is a floor-length, silky coat of steel blue and a rich golden tan. Don’t let the Yorkie’s daintiness fool you. Tenacious, feisty, brave, and sometimes bossy, the Yorkie exhibits all the traits of a faithful terrier.

Yorkies are low-slung with a straight back. They have a small head carried high, with v-shaped ears that stand up tall. Their tails stand up tall, too. The signature characteristic of Yorkshire Terriers is their fine, straight, floor-length coat. Yorkie fur is similar to human hair, making it semi-hypoallergenic.
